Our humane education program is continually being modified and expanded. Currently, Woods Humane Society offers a summer “Critter Camp” for children between the ages of 9-12 years and is a weeklong day camp specifically focused on teaching humane education. Critter Campers spend each day at our facility learning about feline health and behavior, canine health & behavior, bite prevention, responsible pet ownership and canine obedience.
The week starts off with campers being introduced to their Woods Dog, who they will be caring for and training all week long. Campers spend time working with their dogs to teach them a trick and learn about the responsibilities that are required when having a pet of their own. Critter Camp also includes a field trip and multiple hands on demonstrations by local animal welfare organizations. The week culminates with a graduation ceremony for parents to attend in order to see all that their children have learned and experienced. Aside from having a great time playing with the campers, our adoptable Woods animals also receive the benefit of increased socialization and mental stimulation throughout the week. This translates directly into our dogs and cats becoming more adoptable. Our weekly Critter Camp fills up quickly and applications* are available starting April 15th. *we have a limited number of scholarships available for youth who might not have the opportunity to experience camp due to financial limitations, please contact the shelter for more information and eligibility requirements.
We parallel our summer camp schedule with the San Luis Coastal Unified School District schedule, with the 1st week of camp beginning on June 14th and the final week of camp beginning August 9th. You can download a camp registration form here (Registration Form) but we still require that you complete your camper’s registration in person at the shelter starting on April 15th. Come early as space is limited and Critter Camp fills up quickly.
Here is an updated list of camp availability. Please note that we will do our best to keep this list updated but we recommend calling the shelter to verify availability.
