"Low-Kill" Animal Shelter

Woods Humane Society is dedicated to the humane care and treatment of every animal in our care. We would never euthanize an animal for time (length of stay in our adoption program) or “space” (kennel space). Being a private organization, we have the ability to close our intakes should we reach our maximum capacity. Although euthanasia is a difficult issue, it is vital to understand that Woods Humane Society is not a sanctuary. Our mission is to rescue adoptable companion animals and place them into humane environments as quickly as possible. Quality of life is extremely important to all of us at Woods Humane Society and an animal will be pulled from our adoption program if it is terminally ill or if we cannot responsibly adopt the animal back into San Luis Obispo County due to severe aggression issues.

Confronting the Current Animal Overpopulation Issue

Woods Humane Society and the San Luis Obispo Animal Services work together to shelter San Luis Obispo County’s homeless animals. In 2005, we forged an agreement with the county in which Woods will accept no less then 350 adoptable companion animals from the Animal Services in an effort to curb their euthanasia rate. We work closely with Animal Services to actively confront the animal overpopulation problem that San Luis Obispo County currently faces.
